The animal imagery, in terms of both reality and legends, has been one of the most frequently referenced imageries throughout the history of art. The world of dreams built upon animal-like images finds its roots in primitive cultures and ever since has been evolving into separate branches. During the polytheistic era, animals were considered to be godly figures according to the shamanistic belief and totemism. However right after the birth of Christianity and during the period of monotheistic religions, these godly depictions of animals have transformed into figures that refer to wicked elements, although keeping their morphological properties. Until the age of enlightenment, these imaginary creatures have been used and referenced countlessly, pushing the boundaries of this world of dreams. It is also worthy to discuss the special dimension of meaning brought to this monstrous world of animals by teratology. Romanticism, which is considered to be the beginning of the postmodern era, has enabled us to see this animalistic world once again from a friendly perspective. During this era animals have become the main characters of fairy tales and fantastic narratives. During the twentieth century and up to present, however, the depiction of this ever growing animalistic world has been enriched by integrating into the creative work the very nature of animal made of blood and flesh. In summary, our relation with the animal as an envision of the other has been formed by the monotheistic era, Descartes and the Cartesian philosophy, the birth of Romanticism, big cities and the anthropocentric systems of metropolis, the collapse of boundaries with the cybernetic life and endless possibilities brought by technology, all of which have been growing like separate branches. Thus, the traces of the feeling of anxiety caused by this transformation has become the resource for the artistic creations.İngilizce Anahtar Kelimeler:1- Hybrid2- Others3- Monster4- Freak5- Biotechnology.
