ABSTRACT This study, which was conducted in the Earthquake Region and a non- earthquake region following the Earthquake on August 17th, aimed to investigate the common knowledge. The main aim of the study is to examine the recent emerging problem about the nature of the relationship between religious and scientific knowledge. Participants were those from the Earthquake Region and those from a non- earthquake region grouped in five different age ranges of 7-12, 13-17, 18-22, 23-33, 34 and above. The data consisted of the total responses of 180 participants. Interwiews that are employed are Demographic Information and Earthquake Experience Interwiev, Interwiev About the Causes of Earthquake, Attitude Scale, Changing Attitudes Scale. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used simultaneously for the analyses. According to answers of the question about the causes of the earthquake, although natural causes were the frequently used, these causes seemed to be used together with religious causes without any confliction. Secondly, the answers to why and how of the earthquake were differentiated from each qther; while answers to `why did the earthquake happen` come from two universes (religious and scientific), answers to `how did the earthquake happen` come from one universe (scientific). Education level was found to have an effect on both the attitudes and causal explanations. Answers about responsibility, faulty buildings, to become conscious about earthquake, to take precautions, solidarity and helping were the most highly mentioned by the participants. Responsibility themes showed that participants did not want to take any responsibility of the Earthquake on August 17th, on the other hand they wanted to take the responsibility of things that can be publicly or individually done in the future.
