The genus Marrubium L. (Lamiaceae) is represented by about 30 species native to Europe, Asia and North Africa. Among them, Marrubium vulgare L. is a perennial plant, which is generally known as `white horehound` in Europe and used as folk medicine to treat bronchitis, coughs and colds. It is reported to have several biological activities such as immunomodulatory, cardioprotective, antitumor, antimicrobial, vasorelaxant, analgesic, and hypoglycemic activities. Due to potential pharmacological activities of essential oils and their components, many studies have been focused on essential oil-containing plants. In this study, the essential oil of the aerial parts of M. vulgare, collected from Çıralı-Antalya, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC and GC-MS systems. Sixty-two components were identified, representing 75.9% of the total essential oil. The major constituent was β-caryophyllene (25.6%), followed by α-humulene (4.9%), (E)-nerolidol (4.0%), sesquisabinene (3.3%), caryophyllene oxide (2.8%), (E)-β-ionone (2.7%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (2.7%), (Z)-3-hexen-1-yl benzoate (2.5%), phytol (2.5%), 1-octen-3-ol (2.4%), and linalool (2.0%). In addititon, the cytotoxic activity of essential oil obtained from M. vulgare was examined by MTT test in A549 (human lung cancer cells) and BEAS2B (human normal lung cells) cell lines at a concentration range of 1-1000 µg/mL. The highest cytotoxic effect of the essential oil on the tested cells was observed at a concentration of 1000 µg/mL. This is the first report on the composition of the essential oil of the aerial parts of M. vulgare from Antalya and in terms of cytotoxic activity of the essential oil of the plant against A549 and BEAS2B cell lines using by MTT test.
