Özet

House is a sheltering facility that corresponds with its user in time and externalizes the user's identity. Since the early ages, housing design has been a changing process through which different actors could be participated in or excluded, and the roles of all these actors change hierarchically. The user, as the most important actor especially for the design of multi-storey housing intrinsically intended for an undefined user profile, has not been participating in the design process in general. This study based on the hypothesis that the user participation is still possible in the design process, yet this possibility can only be obtained through a flexible housing design or an open building approach in design process. In this context, multi-storey buildings designed for undefined user profile is the focus of problem definition; thus, the problem of undefined user that has been excluded from the design process and that of 'a house as a home' turning into be 'a house as a property and investment'. Therefore, this study is based on the idea that open building related with the concept of flexibility and the 'two step housing supply system' produced within the scope of open building research in Japan could be the best solution for the problem defined. Keywords: Flexibility, adaptability, multistory housing design, undefined user, user participation, sustainability, open building, two step housing supply system.
