Ana María Matute became a popular writer known for her works both in Spain and all around the world during her lifetime. Her works are mostly based on her own life and experiences. In her novels, which have been analyzed throughout this thesis, we have also had the chance to find out the traces of her life and experiences, but there is a difference this time; these novels possess a fantastic background. In this thesis, firstly, it has been explained when the fantastic literature began and then how it has progressed until today and how this literary genre echoed in Spain. After mentioning the summaries of Aranmanoth and La Torre Vigía, only fantastic elements and events have been examined and their symbolic meanings have also been interpreted. Furthermore, extraordinary beings and elements that existed in the guiding imaginary world of Ana María Matute have been encountered in the novels. The nature and thoughts reflected by the characters in the novels and the occurred events and situations filled with darkness have been interpreted. In doing so, it has also been considered to associate with the fantastic context.Ana María Matute has added a special meaning to the fiction with the impression of medievalism given in her novels. For instance, in La Torre Vigía, it has become inevitable –as much as given in the novel- to discuss the influences of the traditions and beliefs that have been stuck in the Middle Ages on human beings. Finally, we need to point out that Ana María Matute intentionally provided an open-ended narration to both of her novels. She always offered her readers the ideas which they can take stock of a situation in their own imagination. This made us think more on the novels and the most important is that it provided to awake the mystery and subtle horror that lies on the basis of the fantastic genre.
