In this thesis a dragline panel design and stripping practice simulation have been carried out firstly on by three-dimensional digital modeling in computer environment and then on a sand pit by physical modeling techniques. Computer-aided simulation study encompassed simulation of dumping on an unrestricted ground, boxcut excavation and direct side casting practice. On the other hand studies on the sand pit are also extended to cover extended benching and pullback casting. The primary objective of the thesis is to determine the geometry of a cut panel on which a dragline of certain dimensions is to be deployed. By this way predetermined dimensions of dragline and the panel could be matched and the dragline could be able to complete the excavation of the panel without switching to another stripping technique. As the principal indicator of this situation the concept of `geometrical stability?, which is a qualitative parameter, is proposed. The indicators of geometrical stability? are the swing angles over sitting positions on the key cut, main cut, bridge and pullback pad, base radius of individual cones, which constitute curvilinear spoil piles and the number of cones overlapped to form a curvilinear spoil pile. Where dimensions of both the dragline and the waste block are matched, swing angles and number of cones tend to increase starting from the first set. However the rate of increase in these parameters diminishes at a certain set, after which it ultimately stabilizes. That the dimensions of dragline are not adequate to those of cut panel on which a specific stripping technique is to be applied is realized by observing a steady and consistent increase in above-mentioned parameters. In the second part of this thesis direct side casting, extended benching and pullback casting techniques are modeled on a scaled sand pit. Dimensions of the model sand pit are 2500 mm × 2500 mm × 500 mm. Finely crushed clayey earth is used as overburden material. In preliminary studies overburden material is spoiled on the pit bottom and on the bench as single cones and curvilinear cones. For both cases volumetric difference between in-situ block and single and curvilinear cones is decreased with increasing block size. Seven, four and three trials are conducted with the dragline operating in the direct side casting mode, extended benching mode and pullback casting mode, respectively. In all trials the blocks can be excavated in accordance with the associated operating technique by a dragline of 70 m operating.Key words: Simulation, dragline, sand pit, stripping techniques.
