The purpose of this study is to test the weak form of market efficiency for Istanbul Stock Exchange, via the trading strategy implied by overreaction hypothesis. The Data of this study have been obtaiened from Istanbul Stock Exchange. These Data comprise the monthly returns of stocks for 36 periods between July 31, 1988 and December 31, 1997. Most winning and most losing 10 stocks ranked in terms of the previous 3 month returns comprise the winner and loser portfolios. The post 3 month return behaviours of winner and loser portfolios, each comprising 10 stocks, have been monitored and abnormal returns and cumulative abnormal returns of them have been computed. Finally, cumulative abnormal returns for the winner and loser portfolios have been compared and whether or not there was a significant difference between them has been examined. According to the results of the empirical study carried out, the winner portfolio have provided an excess return of 89,15% over the market while the loser portfolio have priovided an excess return of 99,89% over the market. Consistent results with the trading strategy implied by overreaction hypothesis (buying the loser stocks and selling the winner stocks of the previous period) have been obtained.
