The main purpose of this thesis is to investigate the existence of parallel processes in emerging markets in the last 30 years in terms of market reforms and democratization. In order to validate this proposition, we have not only analyzed the economic and political developments of this specific time period but also explained how capitalism, democracy and liberalism interrelated in the historical process. In fact, the relationship between economic and political macro variables cannot be analyzed without a historical perspective as if they are rootless concepts, products of only our contemporary world. On the contrary, incorporating the historical dimension, we can build up a healthier assessment of how the changes in economic relations shape political systems. Considering the peculiar type of relationship that emerging markets have with global economic system, we preferred to select Turkey, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina as our target countries for they cannot be classified as mature economies while at the same time they are somewhat integrated into the world economy. Developmentalist economic policies adopted in those countries after World War II can be associated with authoritarian or semi-authoritarian regimes, whereas neoliberal economic policies paved the way for democratization. As a result of expansion of economic relations to global dimensions, market forces acquired the power to counterbalance popular demands; hence the main dynamic opening the way to democratic change was unleashed. In other words, neoliberal reforms enabled the dominance of liberal component of democracy over its radical and egalitarian dimensions, eventually facilitating this transformation.
