Algebra is one of the most important areas of mathematics that allows numbers, symbols, unknowns and variables to be described by assigning meanings to them, act as a conception tool in transition from arithmetic to abstract concepts and enable mathematical language transform into equations by referring.In our country, students start learning algebra at sixth grade. For this reason, the achievements and activities of the algebra sub-topic area, which is included in the sixth grade mathematics curriculum carried out in the schools, is of great importance.The purpose of this research is to examine the effect of the 6th Grade Mathematics Curriculum on the development of the students' algebraic thinking levels.This study, which used quantitative research method, was carried out in Yunus Emre Imam Hatip Secondary School located in Emet district of Kütahya province. A total of 50 students, consist of 29 males and 21 females, participated in the research which was carried out in the first semester of the 2013-2014 School Year. The students are the sixth graders of the school, and no criteria was applied in selecting the sample.In the research, the `Development of The Algebraic Thinking` test, adapted to Turkish by Altun (2005), was applied as pre-test and post-test in order to measure the four levels of algebraic thinking. After pre-testing, subjects regarding algebra were taught for 10 course hours in accordance with the guidelines in the 6th Grade Mathematics Curriculum of 2013-2014 School Year. A post-test was applied one week after the subjects were completed.According to findings from pre-test and post-test data, significant differences were found in favour of the post-test averages at four levels.Furthermore, it was examined as one of the sub problems of the research that whether the effect of the 6th Grade Mathematics Curriculum on students' algebraic thinking levels differs with regard to their general mathematical successes. According to the findings, based on the grade point averages at the end of the first semester of 2013-2014 School Year, the students whose mathematics grades considered as `highly successful` were found to be at a higher level of algebraic thinking than students who were considered as `unsuccessful`.Key words: Algebra, Algebraic Thinking, Sixth Grade Mathematics Curriculum.

Cebir, sayılara, sembollere, bilinmeyenlere ve değişkenlere anlam yükleyerek onları betimleyen, aritmetikten soyut kavramlara geçişte düşünce aracı olarak görev yapan ve yönlendirme yaparak matematiksel dilin denklemlere dönüşmesini sağlayan matematiğin en önemli alanlarından biridir. Ülkemizde öğrenciler cebir öğretimine altıncı sınıfta başlamaktadırlar. Bu nedenle okullarda uygulanan altıncı sınıf matematik öğretim programında yer alan cebir alt konu alanına ait kazanım ve etkinlikler büyük önem taşımaktadır.Bu araştırmanın amacı, 6. sınıf Matematik Öğretim Programının öğrencilerin cebirsel düşünme düzeylerinin gelişimine etkisini incelemektir.Nicel araştırma yönteminin kullanıldığı bu çalışma, Kütahya İli Emet İlçesi Yunus Emre İmam Hatip Ortaokulu'nda gerçekleştirilmiştir. 2013-2014 Eğitim Öğretim Yılının birinci döneminde yapılan uygulamaya 29'u erkek 21'i kız olmak üzere toplam 50 öğrenci katılmıştır. Öğrenciler okulun altıncı sınıf öğrencileridir, örneklem seçiminde herhangi bir kıstas uygulanmamıştır.Araştırmada cebirsel düşünmenin dört düzeyini ölçebilmek amacıyla Altun (2005) tarafından aktarılan `Cebirsel Düşünmenin Gelişimi` testi ön test-son test olarak uygulanmıştır. Ön test uygulandıktan sonra cebirle ilgili konu alanı, 2013-2014 Eğitim Öğretim Yılı 6. sınıf Matematik Öğretim Programındaki yönergelere birebir uyularak 10 ders saati boyunca işlenmiştir. Konu alanı tamamlandıktan bir hafta sonra son test uygulanmıştır.Ön test-son test verilerinden elde edilen bulgulara göre, dört düzeyde de son test ortalamaları lehine anlamlı farklılık olduğu görülmüştür.Ayrıca 6. sınıf Matematik Öğretim Programının öğrencilerin cebirsel düşünme düzeylerine olan etkisinin, öğrencilerin genel matematik başarılarına göre anlamlı farklılık gösterip göstermediği de araştırmanın alt problemlerinden biri olarak araştırılmıştır. Elde edilen bulgulara göre 2013-2014 Eğitim Öğretim Yılı birinci dönem sonu not ortalamalarına göre matematik notu `yüksek başarılı` olarak kabul edilen öğrencilerin, `düşük başarılı` olarak kabul edilen öğrencilere göre daha yüksek seviyede cebirsel düşünme düzeyinde olduğu görülmüştür.Anahtar Kelimeler: Altıncı Sınıf Matematik Öğretim Programı, Cebir, Cebirsel Düşünme.
