There are many studies on the effects of radiofrequency (RF) waves emitted by mobile phones in different frequency bands on human and environmental health. All these studies; show that electromagnetic fields (EMF) may have negative effects on living organisms. 4,5 G compatible mobile phones, operating in wide frequency band, fulfill many functions, such as internet, communication. Therefore, prolongation of the use of such phones is a factor that increases exposure to EMFs. In this thesis study, the effects of 4,5 G compatible mobile phones on the visual system were investigated by using electrobiophysical, biochemical and histological methods. In this study, visual evoked potential (VEP) measurement, optic nerve antioxidant enzyme activities measurement and optic nerve ultra structure were visualized. In the experiments, 32 Wistar albino male rats (16 sham and 16 experimental groups) were used. The rats in the experimental group were exposed to 4,5 G compatible mobile phone, a maximum of 5,4 V / m2, a maximum of 0,009W / kg of SAR and 1800 MHz of EMF, 2 hours per day for 45 days. At the end of the study; there was no statistically significant difference in mean skin temperature between the groups before and after the application (p>0,05). While MDA levels were significantly increased in the experimental group compared to the sham group (p=0,002), antioxidant enzymes, SOD and CAT levels were significantly decreased in experimental group compared to sham group (p<0,05). In intraocular pressure; there was approximately 47% decrease in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0,05). As a result of VEP measurement between sham and experimental groups; while no significant difference is found in the amplitude of the P2 wave (p>0,05), the amplitudes of N2 and P3 and the peak-to-peak amplitudes of P2-N2 and N2-P3 decreased significantly (p<0,05). P2 and N2 latencies in the experimental group did not show a change compared to the control group (p>0,05). P3 latency was found to be shorter in the experimental group than the control group (p<0,05). As a result of investigations made by electron microscope; Myelinated nerve fibers, axons and glial cells have normal morphology in both sham and experimental groups. As a result, exposure to 4,5 G compatible mobile phones for 2 hours each day and 45 days; changes in intraocular pressure, visual evoked potentials and the optic nerve antioxidant system were observed to adversely affect the visual system.Key Words: Radiofrequency wave, electromagnetic field, visual system, optic nerve and 4,5 G mobile phone.Advisor: Prof. Dr. Ulku COMELEKOGLU, Department of Biophysics, University of Mersin, Mersin.
