AbstractThis survey investigates the 64 years history of Turkish Daily newspaper Hurriyet, which starts to be issued first time on 1st May 1948. That how and at which context Hurriyet was initiated by Sedat Simavi, his background of journalism and the novelties he introduced with Hurriyet to the press milieu in Turkey at that time, are dealt in parallel to the process of Turkey?s transition from the one party state to democracy. In this study which is grounded in a three dimensional plane, firstly, its owners?point of view of journalism (respectively Sedat Simavi, Haldun Simavi, Erol Simavi ve Aydın Doğan), in such a way that how they have been influential in respect to the general publishing policy of Hurriyet is exposed, is investigated through this study. The second dimension of the study is based on the general publishing policy and corporate progress of Hurriyet. The changes on the masthead section and in the team of writers, and Hurriyet?s handling the primary questions of Turkey are investigated. Furthermore, in the context of previous debate, as an institution, that the relationship between Hurriyet and political parties and politicians is stationary or variable are discussed via given examples. The third dimension of this study is engaged is the political history of Turkey. Even though the main theme of the content does not seem to be a political history, as the very nature of journalism is a base where life becomes concrete in itself, it would be very difficult to separate these two from each other. Therefore, the political life in Turkeyis handled in the general course of the investigation; by moving through some political scientists? analyses, that which line the recent political history of Turkey has concentrated on is mentioned. As the course of the political history in Turkey is dealt in a way that the peripheral elements? moves toward the centre in accordance with the analysis foreseen by Serif Mardin?s the centre-periphery conceptualization, this situation?s reflection upon Hurriyet is discussed through the axis oflaicism and political reaction. It is a very well known reality that the most critical milestones in the democracy adventure of Turkey were experienced during the area of the military coups. The 27 May, 12 March, 12 September, 28 February and 27 April periods have profound details in respect to the relations of the Press the Military as well as in respect to the relations of civilians and the military. That how Hurriyet dealt with these periods; from whose perspectives Hurriyet reflected the events of these periods; and to what extent it allocated space on the newspaper for the political and military figures is very crucial to understand Hurriyet?s publishing framework. That?s why, in this study, the publishing politics Hurriyet had during the periods of the military coups in Turkey is discussed. As to the history of the Press in Turkey, even if not thoroughly, it is discussed by regarding the breaking phases throughout its history. In this respect, what Hurriyet has functioned is dealt, firstly, in the role it played during the changes of content of the news and articles; secondly, its position during the transition process from the family investments to the capital enterprises in Turkey. The reflections of the journalism, of which consumptibility side is powerful, and paparazzi-laden journalism started to take shape after Ertugrul Ozkok?s taking the position of editor in chief, is also discussed here. Besides, The new operation on the masthead section at Hurriyet on the last days of May 2012 is included in the study as it was a first at the Pressmileu in Turkey. A projection of the subjects such as Cyprus Turks, European Union, and the identification with the Official State politics in the external politics, which might be named with en emphasis of continuity in the publishing politics that Hurriyet has been fallowing since its inception, is presented within the study. The logo of Hurriyet and the signs on the logo is also important in respect to its symbolic meanings. The official flag of the Republic of Turkey, the motto of `Turkey belongs to Turks? and the signs composed of Ataturk?s silhouette are presented by obeying to timeline. It is eventually believed that this study, which has been built around these three dimensions, presents a comprehensive and wholistic approach that sheds light on the 64 years history of Hurriyet, in the context of corporate identity, general publishing policy and its owner?s journalism understanding. It is believed that the equivalence in the context of professionalism and ideology complying with Hurriyet?s position gained through journalism has been way more clarified through this investigation.
