Comparison of Kangal Dogs Indicate Behavioral and Physiological Variables in Different Animal HerdsThe aim of the present study is to evaluate behavioral and physiological parameters of Kangal dogs in different flocks such as sheep and goat flocks which are the most frequently guarded livestocks by those dogs. Twenty healthy Kangal dogs of both genders (10 female and 10 male) and varying ages (1-3 years), which were acquired from private breeders in Divrigi/Sivas, were used in this study. Two saliva samples were obtained from the Kangal dogs with a 1 hour interval when the dogs were resting around the house or the pen. Three saliva samples were taken at 5, 10, 15 minutes from the confrontation with sheep/goat while leaving the sheep/goat pen on the fifth day of the acquisition period for the concerning flock, i.e. sheep flock/goat flock. Moreover, in the 5th evening of the acquisition period for the concerning flocks i.e. sheep flock/goat flock, 3 saliva samples were taken every 5 minutes while the dogs were together with the flock in the pasture. The saliva samples were stored at -20°C until bringing them to the laboratory for further analysis for cortisol using ELISA kits. In order to evaluate behaviors of the Kangal dogs within different flocks, sheep and goat flocks were initially separated from each other. First, the dogs were placed into the sheep flock. Thus, the dogs were only able to see and guard the sheep flock during the following five days. At the fifth day of the acquisition period, video camera system was placed in front of the sheep pen and behaviors of the dogs during the first confrontation with the sheep while the flock was leaving the pen in the nightfall were video recorded. Subsequently, the camera system was moved to the pasture in order to film behaviors of the dogs in the pasture with sheep flocks. Later, the dogs were placed into the goat flock in order that they spent five days only in the goat flock. The same procedure was applied to the goat flock. Namely, at the fifth day of the acquisition period, video camera system was placed in front of the goat pen and behaviors of the dogs during the first confrontation with the goat while the flock was leaving the pen in the nightfall were video recorded. Subsequently, the camera system was moved to the pasture in order to film behaviors of the dogs in the pasture with goat flocks. Considering maximum cortisol values after the confrontation with the livestock, a significant difference was found between the sheep and goat flocks (t-test: p < 0.05). Accordingly, it can be suggested that confrontation with the goat flock is more stressful comparing with sheep the flock. However, no significant difference was found, when comparing maximum cortisol values during the active protection in sheep flock and goat flock (t-test: p = 0.05). Moreover, no statistical difference was found when comparing the direct behavioral reactions of the dogs during the confrontation with the sheep and the goat flocks (t-test: p > 0.05). Considering ?hyperactivity? and ?low tail position? behaviors of Kangal dogs during the active guarding of the flock, statistically significant differences were found between the sheep and goat flocks (t-test: p < 0.01). Thus, one may argue that the dogs feel less secure in the goat flock in comparison to the sheep flock. Keywords: Behavior, cortisol, goat, Kangal dog, sheep, stress.
