SUMMARY In the twentieth century, natural tonal limits of the musical instruments have been pushed, additional materials have been utilized and, in parallel to these, unexpected expressions have been realized by rendering the understanding of solo more flexible. As with the `Octavina`, `Arpa Citera` or with the `Prepared Piano` which had been designed by Henry Cowell in 1914 with pre-changed commas and timbres and introduced by him in the States and in Europe; new instruments have joined the music adding colors to the century in its early years. Utilizing baguettes of different characters such as metal, plastics, or wood, and by placing materials like screw, cable, rubber, etc., in-between the strings, mechanical or with another close expression industrial timbres have been achieved; and in response to these atmospheres, again persuading the same standpoint, with the tones produced thanks to the help of nail, finger or palms a reminiscence of the depths of nature was attempted. This invention, which was applied to all other musical instruments by means of different materials with respect to their structural qualities, has contributed to original expressions, especially in the acoustic music of the century. In the instrumental ensembles, in number fewer instruments with comparison to the past, but extraordinarily, choises comprising phisiological structural characteristics as contestable as they can be were tended more often. In the traditional sense, source groups we distinguish as wind instruments, strings and percussion were experimented courageously also in grand orchestras w ith different layerings; and groups of instruments, which had been put in almost identical internal divisions, were employed to the point of completing each other; by means of `tone cluster` operations formed, extreme instances too complicated and too hard to perceive were achieved. 144In the modem music area, the idea of obtaining tones from the acoustic instruments excessing their functions was developed in the second half of the century, and especially in the last quarter of the century harmonics, bodies of the instruments and similar applications were set to be exercised intensely. In the works based on electronics, on the other hand, every detail of the sounds has been observed in terms of various lenses and the outcomes culminated the `sound` element before our eyes almost to a level of a separate composition in itself. On the acoustic and electronical grounds, human voice, considered as an instrument, in accordance with the changing aesthetical views of the century and sometimes in terms of strict disciplines and sometimes being set free in all aspects has bore structural contributions to music more than ever. Composers, in line with their philosophies, had filtered all musical conceptions through the trends they have been experiencing; renewing each element over and over again they have shortened the time scopes in-between trends and with their searches stigmatized twentieth century as `avant-garde`. 145.

Besteciler, felsefeleri doğrultusunda, tüm müzik kavramlarını yaşadıkları akımların süzgeçlerinden geçirmiş, her öğeyi tekrar tekrar yenileyerek akımlar arası zaman dilimlerini kısaltmış ve arayışlarıyla, yirminci yüzyıla `avant-garde` damgası vurmuşlardır. 143.
