The aim of our study was to compare 3-D virtual sonocystoscopy to conventional cystoscopy in the diagnosis of bladder cancer. The study was performed between July 2009 to July 2010. A total of 50 patients (41 males and 9 females) were included in the study. The study group consisted of pateints who are suspicious to have bladder cancer and are scheduled to undergo cystoscopy for the first time and/or patients who are on control cystoscopy with a previous history of transurethral resection of bladder cancer. All pateints underwent 3-dimensional virtual sonocystoscopic examination followed by the 2-dimensional ultrasonographic examination. The ultrasound findings were correlated to the cystoscopy examinations. In 28 (54.7%) patients, no lesions were identified in both the virtual sonocystoscopy nor the conventional cystoscopy. In 2 (3.9%) patients, lesions were identified with only virtual sonocystoscopy. In 6 (11.8%) patients, lesions were identified with only conventional cystoscopy. In 15 (29.4%) patients pathologies were detected with both conventional and virtual cystoscopy. Ten of 11 malignant lesions that were detected by conventional cystoscopy were also detected by 3-D virtual sonocystoscopy. In our study, 3-D virtual sonocystoscopy did not provided significant contribution over gray scale ultrasonography, but we think that demonstration of the lesion would help the surgeon prior to cystoscopy.
