110 SUHMARY The epidemiological studies on the groups who are under occupa tional risk and exposed to carcinogenic factors, makes it possible to reveal the cancer diseases originating from the work surrounding. The motive point of the occupational cancer epidemiology is to clarify any possible connections between occupational exposure and the formation of cancer to be able to prevent cancer. In this study, primarily the available official records (D.İ.E., S.S.K., S.S.Y.B.) pertaining to the matter have been investigated and the adequacy and the deficiency of these records in assessing occupa tional exposure has been demonstrated in practice with samples. In 1991 as a result of the analysis made between cancer deaths and the number of insured workers in provinces, the correlation coefficient has been found to be r = 0.61, p<G.D01 which shows a significant correlation. The number of cancer deaths observed in the statistical yearbooks of S.S.K. (calculated according to the cancer death rate in the main popu lation) mean : 22.11 + 9.85) is by far below the expected number (mean: 773.45 + 132.47). After this, a wing to gather information from the people directly, 163 patients who were hospitalised in the Nuclear Medicine and Oncology clinic of the :d.S.K. Okmeydanı Hospital were interviewed to seek clues as to the possible connections between their cancer types and job branches. 70?o of the patients in the research group are men and 30% are women. The ratio of the ones below the age of 40 is 28?o. The frequency of cancer encountered in various sectors is in the following order; 58?o in the service sector, 29?o in the production sector, l?o in agriculture and forestry. In the production sector, uroge nital organ cancers are seen the most (31S), followed by respiratory system cancer (25?a). In addition, by interviewing totally 314 peopleIll under risk (164 people from the private sector, 150 from the state sector), their level of knowledge pertaining to the carciongenic effects they're exposed to was inguired. The answers received displayed that they've got deficient knowledge on the matter and that no education is being provided in the places of employment. This proves clearly that there's a firm correlation between education and the level of knowledge. Thus, the current situation of the topic of occupational cancer epidemiology which isn't well known in our country despite the fact that it is getting more important as a result of the progressing industry in developing countries, has been presented with the available data and a significant commence has been made for the studies which will be conducted on this subject in the future.

Araştırma grubundaki hastaların ?o70'i erkek, %30'u kadındır.
