Özet

The presence of an official bureaucracy which is considerably dependent on very strict rules is known in the palace ? the headquarters of the Ottoman Empire with its strong and rooted statist structure. As a reflection of the mighty power of the state, the reception of ambassadors was given a particular importance in the international relations within the period in which the state was powerful. The most luxurious ceremonies were conducted for this purpose. The ambassador and its attendants who were coming to these receptions, which were conducted within the scope of considerably strict rules on particular days, were going back to their countries psychologically impressed by the hierarchal order and power they saw during both the reception and the farewell ceremony. The purpose of this thesis is to comprehensively analyse in a body how the ceremonial order was, especially with the visual documents (miniature, gravure and painting) supported by the written documents. The composition, the stage designs, the colours and the emperor?s ? the absolute power of the throne and the sultanate - presence as a dominant power in the various miniature depictions, which includes receptions scenes, of the period in which the state was powerful is visually analysed. Moreover, the reflection of natural consequences of the mental changes of the time when the Ottoman Empire lost power on the reception ceremonies is emphasized.
