ABSTRACTMaster's ThesisMODELLING THE EFFECT OF TEMPERATURE ON THE GERMINATION AND EMERGENCE OF SEEDS İN SOME PUMPKİN ROOTSTOCKSEsra CengizOndokuz Mayıs UniversityInstitute of Science and TechnologyDepartment of Horticultural CropsSupervisor: Prof. Dr. Ahmet BalkayaThe aim of this study is to estimate the germination speed, 50% germination duration, germination rate, the first emergence time, and emergence rates of some commercial interspecific cucurbita rootstock seeds through mathematical modeling developed by considering the effects of the temperature on the germination and emergence potentials of the seeds at different temperatures. In the study, six commercial varieties (Obez, Tol-212, RS-841, Shintoza, Gurdal and Nun 9075) are used as cucurbita rootstocks. Germination performances of these seeds are evaluated at eleven different temperature (12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33, 36, 39, 42°C) conditions. In addition, emergence tests are conducted under 6 different temperature applications represented as minimum (12°C-15°C), optimum (24°C-27°C), and maximum (36°C-39°C). Within this purpose, [D= a - (b x T) + (c x T2)] model found previously by Uzun et al., (2001) was revised as [D= a + (b x T) + (c x T2)] by us so as to estimate the germination and emergence potentials. Regression coefficients (R2) of equations generated for each type is found as between 0.87 and 0.96 for germination values, and between 0.85 and 0.98 for emergence values. The coefficients obtained from generated regression models are used and optimum temperatures necessary for the germination and emergence capacity of the seeds are calculated by T0= -b/2xc model. The optimum temperatures estimated through this model are found as; between 27.61°C and 29.12°C for germination speed, between 26.18°C and 27.60°C for germination rate, and between 24.31°C and 26.92°C for emergence rate.
