Özet

ABSTRACTİmamoğlugil, Halil, The Syllogism in the Early Muslim Logicians, Ph. D.,Advisor: Assoc. Prof. İsmail Köz, 257 pp.In this thesis, the early Muslim logicians? understanding of syllogism has beeninvestigated. The thesis consists of an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. In the introduction, a brief summary of inference, sorts of inference and thetheory of syllogism have been given. The classical logic has based mainly onsyllogism in inference. Here the main target is to research the syllogism. Theinduction and analogy, other two ways of inference, are the matters to which theclassical logicans have not given much importance. In the first chapter, the definition of syllogism and its analysis have beenexamined. While defining the syllogism, Muslim scholars folowed the Aristoteliantadition. In the second chapter, the sorts and forms of syllogism have been studied. Interms of form, Muslim logicians dealt with the syllogism under the two parts. Theyfirst divided the syllogism in accordance with the numbers of propositions theyincluded into two parts as ?simple and compound syllogisms? and in accordance withthe sorts of propositions as ?certain and selective ones? respectively. In the third chapter, the matters connected with syllogism have been dealtwith. Among these matters Muslim logicians did not pay much attention to thededuction and analogy. Rather they merely explained their meanings. In the conclusion, the main ideas have been summerized and various opinionsof Muslim logicians have been drawn attention to.
