After the Imperial Edict of Reorganization (1839), Turkey was influenced by Western movements of thought and first reflections of this can be observed in Turkish literature. The Turkish novel, particularly, was the ground for discussions about the political and social problems of Turkey, for a long time including the late Ottoman and the early Republican era. With his novels, Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar had a significant place in the Turkish political thinking. Considering the Westernization process of Turkey which took place since 1839, he perceived it as a matter of civilization shifting. In his novels, he looked into the dilemmas and depressions of the society and the individual, which were caused by civilization shifting.Ahmet Hamdi, who had witnessed various events in Turkish political history during his life from the rule of II. Abdülhamit until coup d'etat in 27th May 1960, was the student of Yahya Kemal, who was one of the pioneers of cultural conservatism in the Turkish thinking. Tanpınar has been affected by his ideas, his comprehension of history and culture, and his closeness to Bergson's philosophy.Due to the language he employed in his writings, his approach to the Westernization which was different from that of official ideology, and his remarks about the Ottoman past, Tanpınar was perceived as a thinker who was a follower of Yahya Kemal. Partly because of this perception, his writings did not draw much attention during his lifetime. However, after his death, especially due to the change of the climate of the thinking in Turkey, his name was recalled, his writings were printed again. From 1970s to 2000s, Ahmet Hamdi has been explored anew and became a source of reference in the discussions on Westernization, modernization, conservatism in Turkish political thinking. As a result of this, the perception that he had a conservatist stance has been questioned.Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, who had extensive knowledge on both Eastern and Western civilizations and who could achieve to look into the problems of the country from a different point of view,is one of the exceptional figures in Turkish political thinking. Therefore, his ideas and writings should be examined for a better understanding of the political and cultural problems that Turkey faced since the Imperial Edict of Reorganization.

Abdülhamit saltanatından, 27 Mayıs 1960 darbesine kadar Türkiye'nin siyasi tarihindeki birçok olaya tanıklık eden Ahmet Hamdi, Türk düşünce hayatında kültürel muhafazakârlığın öncülerinden Yahya Kemal'in öğrencisidir.
