Çetinkaya, Buse S. The Specter of Whiteness: The Racial Psyche in the Short Storiesof Flannery O?Connor, Master?s Thesis, Advisor: Prof. Dr. Belgin Elbir, 110 p.ABSTRACTThis thesis focuses on the questions of guilt and redemption that haunt thewhite Southern community in the U.S. in the post-civil war era, in six stories byFlannery O?Connor. The psychoanalytic theories of Sigmund Freud are used as the maintheoretical approach to analyze the reasons for and consequences of the trauma thatthe white Southern community has experienced. The psychoanalytic concepts of theego-ideal and superego are used to explain how the protagonists are caught up in bothan illusory sense of superiority and the guilt of slavery that accompanies it. The maintheoretical sources are Freud?s works: ?On Narcissism,? ?The Uncanny,? and Totemand Taboo.Alongside Freudian concepts, René Girard?s sociological theory ofscapegoating, which he explains in Violence and the Sacred, is employed to analyzethe issue in relation to the white Southern community as a whole and to emphasize thecollective quality of the experience. The thesis consists of three chapters:In the first chapter, ?the creation of the ego-ideal,? is analyzed in the author?s?The Geranium? and ?Judgement Day.? The illusory sense of white superiority islinked with the creation of the ego-ideal in psychoanalysis. In the second chapter, ?The Superego,? the author?s ?Everything That RisesMust Converge,? and ?The Artificial Nigger? are discussed, using Freud?s essay ?TheUncanny? as the main theoretical source. In the third chapter, ?The Mechanism of Scapegoating,? the author?s storiesentitled ?Revelation,? and ?The Partridge Festival? are analyzed, taking Girard?sViolence and the Sacred and Freud?s Totem and Taboo as the main theoreticalsources.

Bu tezde İç Savaş sonrası güney Amerika'yı içine alan ve bunalıma sokan suç ve kurtuluş kavramları, güneyli yazar Flannery O'Connor'ın altı hikayesi: ?The Geranium,? ?Judgement Day,? ?Everything That Rises Must Converge,? ?The Artificial Nigger,? ?Revelation? ve ?The Partridge Festival? 'inde ele alınmıştır.Güneyli beyaz toplumun yaşadığı travmanın sebep ve sonuçlarını incelerken Sigmund Freud'un geliştirdiği psikanalitik kuram esas alınmıştır. ?Ego ideali? ve ?süperego? psikanalitik terimleri, hikayelerdeki başkahramanların üstün beyazlık sanrısı ve buna bağlı olarak gelişen kölelik kurumunun hissettirdiği suçluluk duygusunu açıklamada kullanılmıştır. Kuramın açıklanmasında Freud'un ?Narsisizm Üzerine,? ?Tekinsizlik?? ve Totem ve Tabu eserleri kullanılmıştır.Tezde Freud'un yanısıra Fransız antropolog René Girard'ın eseri Şiddet ve Kutsal'da incelediği günahkeçisi mekanizması esas alınarak hikayelerde incelenen beyaz karakterlerin travmasının toplumsal kökenli olduğu vurgulanmıştır.Tez üç bölümden oluşmaktadır:Birinci bölüm, ?Ego İdeali'nin Oluşumu?nda, yazarın ?The Geranium? ve ?Judgement Day? hikayeleri incelenmiştir.
