Özet

The study entitled `Novel as a Tool of Social Change (1872-1896)` aims to identify how, after the proclamation of The Tanzimat Edict, the novelists of the era shape the process of social change in Turkish society. The authors of this period, especially Ahmet Midhat Efendi, carefully observed the social change after the proclamation of The Tanzimat Edict and reflected all its positive and negative aspects in their novels. The analysis of novels published between 1872-1896 reveals that they reflect several aspects of social life of the period. The roots of the old-new controversy which still continues today, extends to The Tanzimat years. It is evident from the heroes and the choice of subject matter in their Works that the novelists aimed to increase social awareness and positively affect the process of social change.
