The aim of this dissertation is to study the concept of death as social criticism in James Joyce's Dubliners. Through the stories in the book, this study attempts to show that certain forces of society such as history, past, politics, economics, religion, family and marriage have a deprecating impact upon the individuals. When these forces are degraded, or corrupted, they come to have a deadening influence upon the individuals. Hence in James Joyce's stories, these forces of Dublin society have become to degrade people, or, as Joyce's aim in writing the book to present the moral paralysis of his country, these institutions come to have a paralyzing effect upon the lives of people. They become paralyzed in every possible way, mentally, physically, and most importantly spiritually that they start to lead a dead like life. Thus, this study aims to explore that death-like lives of people of Dublin which are caused by the deadening effect of history, past, politics, religion, family, and marriage, at the turn of the century through the stories in Dubliners of James Joyce.
