Özet

This thesis investigates the firmness of the principle of non-contradiction. Contradictions have caused trouble for the human mind since the beginning of the history of philosophy. While some philosophical traditions considered contradictions true, many thinkers held that they are not. The first philosopher who built a framework for contradictions was Aristotle. Aristotle defined contradictions as logical, ontological and psychological impossibilities, and underlined that the principle of non-contradiction is the firmest principle. The view that all other principles are based on the principle of non-contradiction and the principle does not need proofs for its truth was denied by Jan Lukasiewicz in 1910. Thus, the firmness of the principle of non-contradiction has become a problem and it is followed by new logical and philosophical views which deny or violate this principle. We aim to shed light on the views regarding contradictions in the history of philosophy and on Aristotle's claims on the principle of non-contradiction in order to understand the historical background of the problem and to introduce the contemporary arguments concerning this problem.
