Most Ugandan farmers earn their living through agriculture. Coffee production is one of the essential economic activities they engaged in.The aim of this study was to analyse the activities of Bugisu Cooperative Union and its effects on member economies. The objectives were to establish the factors that determine coffee farmers? membership to the cooperative, identify the type of enterprise preferred by farmers for their farm business, find out the type and quality of cooperative services offered by the cooperative to farmers, identify the cooperative services preferred by the farmers, find out the reasons hampering some farmers from working with the cooperatives, and establish the role of this cooperative for non-economic criteria in Lwakhakha zone Manafwa district in Uganda. This thesis addresses 146 farmers in the eight sub-counties of Bubutu, Magale, Namboko, Bumbo, Bukokho, Bumwoni, Bukiyabi and Lwakhakha town council in Lwakhakha zone. These factors were analyzed by using Binary Logistic Regression to discover the factors that determine farmers? choice of membership to the cooperative; Analytic Hierarchy Process model for determining farmers? preferences of one of the enterprises (cooperatives, middlemen and private traders) based on the ability of each enterprise to generate high profit, provide lowest risk exposure and provide marketing opportunities to the farmers; and the Fuzzy logic for analysing the cooperative services offered to the coffee farmers. The results were interpreted using the chi-square test and Kruskal-Wallis test. The results established that farmers with more experience in coffee farming and earned more income from coffee sales where likely to be members of the Bugisu Cooperative Union, cooperatives were the most preferred enterprise in farm business while farmers gave greatest importance in the generation of high profit. Between the two services provided by the cooperative, farmers had higher preference for marketing service than technical assistance. Although in general, farmers showed higher preference for input procurement than provision of credit, marketing and technical services. The role of the cooperative in non-economic criteria was moderate and therefore, require that the Bugisu Cooperative Union does more on improving upon service delivery to farmers and the entire community. Finally, having established that there were other factors that determine farmers? incomes, the conlusion is that there was little effect of the cooperative activities on member economies in Lwakhakha zone.Key words: Farmer preferences, Bugisu Cooperative Union, BCU member, Non-member, Coffee, Factor Analysis, Binary Logistic Regression, Analytic Hierarchy Process, and Fuzzy logic.
