Wheat is the most important cereal crops in the world, and it is in the forefront of global strategic crops for its importance. It is a food source for more than half of the world's population. It is one of the most important grain crops that cover a larger planted area of the earth compared to other food crops. It has been asserted that the wheat is not only a major food source, but also the main business of work and source of in income for the poor. The main objective of this study is analyzed and estimates to investigate the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, focusing on the effect of input use cost and determine the main limiting factors of wheat production respectively. This study depends on the secondary data which has been collected by the ministry of planning Northern-Iraq, directorate of statistics Erbil province for agricultural season 2012-2013. The descriptive analysis and regression analysis were used to investigate the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, estimate the production cost and profitability of wheat and determine the main limiting factors of wheat production. The statistical analysis of the socio-economic characteristics revealed that the average age of farmers was 44.58 years which are within the active age groups and their average yield was 508.77 kg/acre. The budgeting analysis results showed that wheat is profitable for farmers. The cost analysis showed that harvest cost was the main cost item followed by fertilizer cost. According to regression analysis, the farm size, irrigation, seed quantity, pesticide quantity, and sowing date were the main important variables that significantly affect wheat production. Keywords: Wheat, Input use, Production function, Erbil city, Iraq.Kahramanmarash Sutcu Imam UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied ScienceBioengineering and Sciences October/2016Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Cuma AKBAY.
