How the speaker uses the language in order to accomplish what he would like to say and what kind of a meaning the listener derives establish the basis of the theory of speech acts. Austin states that most of the thinkers have believed statements could only be to define a situation or to state a fact; however, many things which are, without question, accepted as statement have been dealt with again with the theory of speech acts. The theory of speech acts generally implies communication acts. With the theory of speech acts, Austin performs a systematic exposition of language, and Austin divides statements as performatives and constatives. Performative utterances are rich and infinite meaningful utterances which usually seem to be statements but are not. They cannot be defined as right or wrong; to say something is to act. Constatives, on the other hand, utterances which can be defined as right or wrong. They are mostly propositions and statements. Establishing the basis of his theory this way, Austin claims that there are three kinds of acts: locutionary act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. Austin?s student Searle disagrees with Austin over the classification of acts while he accepts the discrimination which has been put forward by Austin at the beginning of the theory of speech acts. Searle?s classification is as follows: utterance act, propositional act, illocutionary act and perlocutionary act. In this study, two most important names have been dealt with, their views have been evaluated separately, and while doing this, instead of proving which one thinks better than the other one, the way they dealt with the theory of speech acts, how they defined what the relation between langugae and the world is, and how language could be classified with the theory of speech acts have been targeted. In this context, it has been determined language is a characteristic element of all the activities related to mankind, and consequently determines such activities as a person?s acts and intentions, and the relation between language and ethic is set out via the theory of speech acts. The thinker who dealt with and examined the relation of speech acts with ethic down to the smallest detail is R. M. Hare. Hare is a thinker who produced countless work about philosophy of language, religion, education, applied ethics and especially moral philosophy. According to Hare, the theory which carefully examines the formal characteristics of language down to the last detail, and consequently provides important contribution to help us lift the barricades before reasoning is the theory of speech acts. In this context, Hare claims that moral judgments, statements and imperatives may have common characteristics, and consequently all of these may be questioned through language research and this could be done with the theory of speech acts. Stating that moral judgments are prescriptives, Hare deals with how moral questions which are among the basic functions of moral philosophy could be asked within the logical structure of language.
