IV SUMMARY The tradition has always been considering the intellect as superior to the body, and what is intellectually acquired as superior to what is sensitively acquired. This approach has been more strengthened than ever in our epoch, giving way to some new criteria and standards of judgment. (The intellect and the things it produces are identified with men, and the body and its dependants to women). The daily life, regarded from this point of view, is the focal point of the ordinariness; so, it has been despised in comparison with the refined produces of the culture, such as science, art, and philosophy, which necessitate a conscious effort and work. Nevertheless, the daily life is not only the juxtaposition of daily events and acts, or the focal point of the commonplaceness, the routine; it is also an interaction center, a kind of melting pot, from which we have to start in our way to realize something original, and different. In traditional classifications of the artistic genres, the still life, which is a way of painting, not knowing the human figure, adopting the inanimate objects or material property, and considered as a secondary genre in the seventeenth century, has been despised too; thus it is put on the lowest step of the artistic hierarchy. The aim of those who assigned to the still life this lowest rang -they were principally representatives of the well-established institutions- was to highlight the place of the painting -painting other than still life- among the fine arts. They affirmed that the part played by the artist had to be different from that of the artisan. The task of artist would be to deal with abstract notions. However, this banishment of the still life did not fast very longtime. Social changes brought new value judgments in art, so that, the still life began to climb the steps of the hierarchy, and at the beginning of the twentieth century it was not only an independent genre but also a genre from which the avant-garde trends received lessons. Today it is universally accepted and adopted, both from the technical and ideological points of view. From the first exemplars on, the still life has been, almost continually, dealing with foods' world. The act of nourishment, which we consider as an ordinary operation of the daily life, offers us, beside the vital importance it has for our very existence, the occasion of studying the human figure in its multiple expressions.Taken into an artistic account, food and drink are, as they always have been, one of the most reliable means to express several messages, charged metaphors and symbols. The ordinary, the daily have always been despised, since the antiquity. In our epoch, this mentality acquired new conceptions, new significations. The modern art has seen its contrary in what is ordinary, natural, and unrefined. It has desired to keep its position not only against the culture of the daily life but also the mass culture as well as the entertainment. It has also pushed the women outside the 'grand art' because it found them as in relation the mass culture. Briefly, the modern art refusing all kinds of classical representation systems, destroyed the content, erased the subjectivity, ignored the similitude, any analogy with the reality, and chased any kind of quest for realism. Now, no human activity can ignore the reality at the same degree as pretend the modernist mentality. It is common knowledge that, whoever breaks the links with the social interaction, the cultural traditions, in short, the external world, is alienated. Man is part of the external world; he perpetually is in reciprocal influence with it. We see that the separation between the cognitive and the affective is declining; or society is trying to approach the man within a frame unifying the intellect and the body.
