Euphrates Valley has a special role in pistachio cultivation generally in Turkey and particularly in the southeastern Anatolian region of the country. The pistachio occupies first position in the product pattern of the Euphrates Valley. Several species belonging to phylum Arthropoda and class Insecta are known as pests of pistachio creating hurdles in successful pistachio production. Some of these insects cause significant qualitative and quantitative losses to pistachio orchards. Identification and protection of beneficial insect fauna are very important in order to keep the harmful pests under pressure in the wake of biological control programs. Therefore, overwintering Insecta fauna of pistachio orchards in Fırat Valley of Birecik district was determined in the current study. For this purpose, five different orchards which were representative of the Euphrates Valley were selected in the study region. Ten plants were selected within each orchard and artificial overwintering shelters were created on each selected tree. For the overwintering period of insects, five of these trees were covered with a burlap sack and five of them were covered with corrugated cardboard. The burlap sack and corrugated cardboard were wrapped around tree stems to create overwintering habitats. Insects were collected from artificial shelters before leaving the overwintering period and the species were grouped according to taxonomy and recorded after counting. Then, these species were appropriately preserved, tagged and diagnosed by subject experts. At the end of the study, 20 insect species were determined belonging to 20 different families and 6 classes. The overwintering insect species in pistachio orchards of Birecik Valley were; Oenopia conglobata (Linnaeus, 1758) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Hippodamia variegata (Goeze, 1777) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae), Coccinella septempunctata (Linnaeus,1758) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Scymnus spp, (Kugelann , 1794) (Coleopreta: Coccinallidae) Malachius rubidus (Erichson, 1840) (Coleoptera: Malachiidae), Loraphodius suarius (Falderman, 1835) (Coleoptera: Aphodiidae), Tentyria euphratica (Girard 1966) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae), Capnodis carbonaria (Klug, 1829) (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), Aulacobaris coerulescens (Scopoli, 1763) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Bangasternus orientalis (Capiomont, 1873) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Drasterius bimaculatus (Rossi, 1790) (Coleoptera: Elateridae), Hermaeophaga (Orthocrepis) ruficollis (Lucas, 1849) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Piezodorus lituratus (Fabricus, 1794) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), Liohryssus hyalinus (Fabricus, 1794) (Hemiptera: Rhopolidae), Geocoris luridus (Fieber, 1844) (Hemiptera: Lygaeidae), Centrocoris volxemi (Puton, 1878) (Hemiptera: Coreidae), Dolycoris baccarum (Linnaeus, 1758) (Heteroptera,: Pentstomidae), Eurygaster spp. (Laporte, 1833) (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae), Chrysoperla carnea (Stephens, 1836) (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae) and Schistocerca gregaria (Forskol, 1775) (Orthoptera: Acrididae).
