The concept of democracy, which originated in the Ancient Greek period, has many controversial definitions and types. Its original type was a direct democracy and this original form was first used in classical Athens. Democracy, which was practiced there for almost two centuries, vanished from the stage of history at large after the Macedonian invasion. Almost two thousand years after its extinction, democracy arose once more at both intellectual/political philosophical level in the 17th century and at the practical level in the 19th century — but this time in a different form, what is called representative democracy. A great deal of divergent types of democracy have been developed and proposed as alternatives to and remedies for overcoming the deficiencies of democracy's representative form. In other words, liberal democracy, whose decision making process is mainly based on a representative model, has been regarded as the most suitable form of democracy to attain some essential goals and values in modern times with the development and growing predominance of capitalism. Liberal democracy, however, has also been subjected to severe criticisms in terms of its problematic aspects regarding, i.e. representation, legitimacy and manageability since the end of the 20th century. Social democracy has first been developed as an alternative model to overcome the deficiencies of liberal democracy, but those proposals have not been comprehensively implemented. Another cluster of theorists who agree on the view that liberal democracy is in a crisis is the proponents of radical democracy. According to the supporters radical democracy, in today's postmodern world, both the concept of state itself and state-civil society relations have been experiencing change and transformation in many respects. The existing dominant and prevalent model(s) of democracy, however, lags behind these changes and transformations, so an alternative type of democracy is needed. Proponents of radical democracy have divergent theoretically, normatively or institutionally related ideas and proposals for addressing the crisis of liberal/representative democracy. In this thesis, essential theoretical and normative tenets of radical democracy are examined by focusing on Jürgen Habermas' deliberative democracy and Chantal Mouffe's agonistic democracy. It is argued that while Habermas's deliberative democracy is based on the idea that the crisis of liberal democracy can be overcome by initiating an idea of active citizenship, civil society and public debate; Mouffe criticises deliberative democracy on the grounds that the idea of consensus supported by radical democrats is against the essential ideas and values of democracy. Mouffe's agonistic democracy, on the other contrary, is based on the idea of politicization of differences. Methodologically, this thesis aims to examine deliberative democracy and agonistic democracy as alternative models provided to address the crisis of liberal/representative democracy in a theoretical and descriptive manner.
