In this study, concepts of reality and realism in documentary film were examined, with a view towards further clarifying them in context of documentary film. These two concepts -documentary and reality- have become conflated with interwoven meanings and ideas. In order to more clearly discern the nature of these distinct aspects of documentary film, it is first necessary to refer to the definitions of these concepts. Within this study, these concepts were considered from the perspectives of various disciplines by bringing together different classifications and new knowledge. New perspectives were explored by which the functions of documentary film are described as an art, as well as a communication medium. Documentary film, as well as being a universal communication medium, is an artwork, too. Unlike fiction film, which developed from the documentary film, documentary film also has responsibility for representing reality. However, the concept of reality is one of the fundamental issues that human beings have discussed throughout history, but have been unable to arrive at a universally agreed, definitive understanding. Consequently, the documentary, however, can not be regarded merely as an artwork and a medium. This young art that has the responsibility of documenting and representing reality, has embarked on a difficult journey that utilises the accumulation of the arts that existed before. Although the fiction film has gained greater popularity, the documentary film has not lost its value, on account of its social responsibility. In order to better understand the conclusions reached in this study, the proposed ideas were considered in context of examples from Iranian cinema, which has acquired its own unique place in world cinema. Thus, the study aimed to seek answers to basic questions such as what is the reality in the documentary film, what is the status of fact/truth in the documentary film, and how the reality should be represented in the documentary film.
