In this study, changes in traditional dwellings in the region of Umurlar (Balikesir) were investigated. The aim is to investigate the impacts of modernization in traditional dwellings with a cultural perspective. The research area consists of traditional rural dwellings in the region of Umurlar. This isolated region is an area that the traditional dwellings have been protected and survived up to now in comparison with towns. However, the alterations in traditional dwellings in rural settlements change according to the degree of isolation. From a working site that is relatively isolated, three village settlements are taken as examples in terms of isolation: Umurlar, Şabanlar and Akbaşlar. If the modernization process of traditional dwellings is researched in an approach that centres the formations of people and their culture, more accurate results could be reached. Thus, this study is a qualitative field study. Data is completely based on the interviews and observations. The modernization process have caused changes in traditional rural dwellings in the study field. The most notable factor in the changes is the alteration of construction material used. Besides, alterations have occured in house plans, inner elements of dwellings, thier extentions and in common dwellings of settlements. The key determinant of these alterations is the culture. In addition to this, factors such as degree of isolation and accessibility affect the alterations in different scales. As accessibility, communication and acculturation improve in isolated areas, the modernization process becomes more visible. As a result of this process, firstly the elements reflecting the traditionality in dwellingis and then the traditional dwellings themselves disappear.
