The main interest of this thesis is to examine the relationship between the theme of alienation and how it is manifested itself stylistically and thematically in Ernest Hemingway?s The Sun Also Rises. The theoretical part of this thesis introduces the concept of alienation through multi-perspective description of its meanings and uses within as many disciplines as possible. Especially the sprawl of Existentialism and modernization with its impacts, impositions, dictations, and institutions are considered to be the source of alienation. In this way, together with various manifestations of alienation such as ?rootlessness?, ?powerlessness?, ?normlessness?, ?meaninlessness?, alienation has become one of the major themes of literature in the twentieth century. (Seeman 1959, p.790)In the following chapter, the thematic patterns such as the depiction of ?Lost Generation? and ?code hero? and the stylistic devices such as cubist and fragmentary writing style and the use of repetition Hemingway uses throughout the novel while developing the theme have been examined. In the second part of Chapter II, the characters?, particularly Jake Barnes?s alienation from society, God, and self have been analyzed. In the conclusion part, in the searh for authentic way of life, Hemingway?s alienated characters confront with the absence of purpose, order, meaning, and value in the universe and in human life. Thus, in the face of nothingness, characters struggle to live gracefully under pressure and endure physical and emotional pain in silence. Keywords: Alienation, Ernest Hemingway, Lost Generation, nothingness.
