III SUMMARY PhD Thesis Investigation of some of the Nucleophilic Addition Reactions of Carbonyl Compounds in Gas Phase by Molecular Orbital Methods Hülya (ATİ LA) YEKELER Cumhuriyet University Graduate School of Natural and Applied Sciences Department of Chemistry Supervisor : Prof. Dr. Refik ÖZKAN In this study, reactions of some of the halogenated and deuterated derivatives of ethanal and 2-propanone with H2O, D2O, CH3OH and CH3OD in gas phase and acid catalysis were computationally investigated using MOPAC6. In order to investigate the steric effects, in these reactions, ethanal and 2- propanone were chosen, while their halogenated derivatives for the electronic effects. For this purpose, first, carbonyl compounds were protonated, then the transition states in these reactions were determined using SADDLE method in MOPAC6. The geometry of the transition states were checked by means of the force constant matrix whether it had only one negative value or not. The vibrational frequencies were calculated by the PM3 method whose results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The MNDO method was used to optimize the geometries and to calculate the heats of formation. It was seen that the reactions of ethanal with H2O and CH3OH were exothermic, on the other hand, the reactions of 2-praponone with H2O and CH3OH were endothermic. As the electronegativity of halogen atom increases, the reactions take place easily. It was also seen that these reactions gave good results with respect to Hammond Postulate. The values obtained for the energy and geometry of reactions using D2O and CH3OD were the same as the reactions using H2O and CH3OH, although it was expected to be different. ÖZET Doktora Tezi Karbonil Bileşiklerine Gaz Fazında Bazı Nükleofilik Katılma Tepkimelerinin Moleküler Orbital Yöntemleriyle İncelenmesi Hülya (ATİ LA) YEKELER Cumhuriyet Üniversitesi Fen Bilimleri Enstitüsü Kimya Anabilim Dalı Danışman : Prof. Dr. Refik ÖZKAN Bu çalışmada, MOPAC6 paket programı kullanılarak etanal ve 2-propanonun bazı halojenli ve döteryumlu türevlerinin gaz fazında ve asitli ortamda H2O, D2O, CH3OH ve CH3OD ile olan nükleofilik katılma tepkimeleri incelendi. Etanal ve 2-propanon bu tepkimelerdeki sterik etkinin, bunların halojenli türevleri ise elektronik etkinin önemini incelemek için seçildi. Bu tepkimelerde, önce karbonil bileşikleri protonlandı ve daha sonra yukarıdaki nükleofillerle olan tepkimelerindeki geçiş halleri MOPAC6 programında yeralan SADDLE yöntemi ile belirlendi. Tepkimelerdeki geçiş hali geometrilerinin geçiş haline ait olup olmadığı kuvvet sabiti matrisinde sadece bir tane negatif değerin olmasıyla anlaşıldı. İR spektrumlarındaki bazı belirgin piklere ait titreşim frekansları bu konuda en iyi sonuç veren PM3 yöntemiyle hesaplandı. Oluşum ısılarının hesaplanmasında ve geometri optimizasyonlarında MNDO yöntemi kullanıldı. Yapılan çalışma sonunda, etanalın H2O ve CH3OH ile olan tepkimelerinin ekzotermik, 2-propanonun H2O ve CH3OH ile olan tepkimelerinin ise endotermik olduğu görüldü. Halojen grubunun elektronegativitesi arttıkça tepkime daha kolay olmaktadır. Ayrıca etanal ve 2-propanonun bu tepkimelerinin, Hammond Kuramına uygun sonuçlar verdiği görüldü. D2O ve CH3OD kullanılarak yapılan tepkimelerden ise enerji ve geometrilere ait değerlerde, döteryumsuz türlere göre farklı bir sonuç alınamadı. Ancak bu çalışmada hesaplanan titreşim frekanslarının deneysel değerlere oldukça yakın olduğu görüldü. ANAHTAR KELİMELER : Moleküler Orbital (MO), Geçiş Halleri, İR, Etanal, 2- Propanon.
