Many factors influence the effectiveness of environmental education in reaching its goals. Socioeconomic factors are also considered to be influential in the development of environmental consciousness which is a goal of environmental education. In this study, the effect of socioeconomic status on the development of environmental consciousness is investigated.Küçükçekmece Lake has been a source of drinking water for centuries; but in the last 50 years it has been polluted because of unplanned industrialization and urbanization in the area. Work for saving the Küçükçekmece Lake is continuing within the framework of the Environmental Management Model project which is a Turkish-Greek collaboration and supported by TÜBİTAK. One of the tasks of this work is to analyze the relationship between the socioeconomic status and the environmental awareness of the young population living in the basin. With these objectives, a two-part questionnaire has been developed to determine the i) socioeconomic and ii) environmental awareness levels of the primary, secondary and tertiary students attending schools located in the area. Using the results of the questionnaire, students at each education level are divided into three groups: low, middle and high socioeconomic level. When the environmental awareness of different socioeconomic groups in each education level are compared, it is statistically proved with 95% confidence that in primary and secondary levels, students from the middle socioeconomic group has the highest level of environmental awareness. However in the tertiary level, no statistically significant -with 95% confidence - variation of environmental awareness with economic status has been observed. The analysis of the changes in the environmental awareness of each socioeconomic group with education level shows that there is a statistically significant improvement -with 95% confidence- in the environmental awareness of low and middle socioeconomic groups with education level. No statistically significant improvement is observed in the environmental awareness of high socioeconomic group between the primary and secondary education levels. However, statistically significant - with 95% confidence- improvement is observed in the environmental awareness of the high socioeconomic group between secondary and tertiary education levels.
