Amaç: Bu araştırma askerlerde benlik saygısı düzeyleri ile sigara içme davranışı arasındaki ilişkiyi belirlemek amacıyla planlanmıştır.Materyal ve Metot: Araştırmanın evrenini 2016 yılı Mayıs ayında İnönü Kışlası'ndaki er/erbaşlar oluşturmuştur. Araştırmada örneklem seçimine gidilmeyip evrenin tamamı olan 283 er/erbaşa ulaşılmak hedeflenmiş ancak 254 kişiye ulaşılmıştır. Veri toplanmasında sosyodemografik özellikleri içeren veri formu, sigara içme tutum ve davranışlarını ölçen sorular ile `Fagerstom Nikotin Bağımlılığı Testi` ve `Benlik Saygısı Ölçeği'' kullanılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen veriler bilgisayar ortamında, frekans ve yüzde dağılımı, anova, t testi, korelasyon kullanılarak değerlendirilmiştir.Bulgular: Askerlerin %72.4'ü 20-25 yaş aralığında, %68.1'i lise ve üzerinden mezun, %56.3'ü orta gelir düzeyindedir. Sosyodemografik verilerden yaş, gelir ve eğitim düzeyinin artmasıyla benlik saygısının arttığı saptanmıştır (p<0.05). Askerlerin %59'u sigara içmekte ve içenlerin %48.6'sı düşük düzeyde nikotin bağımlısıdır. Sigaraya başlama sebebinin çoğunlukla sosyal çevre olduğu, askerlik döneminde sigarayı artırmada en önemli etkenin stres olduğu, askerliğin ilerleyen dönemlerinde benlik saygısı puan ortalamalarının azaldığı, benlik saygısı toplam puan ortalaması ve benlik saygısı alt boyutları ile nikotin bağımlılığı arasında ilişki olmadığı saptanmıştır (r:-0.092, p:0.264).Sonuç: Benlik saygısı ile nikotin bağımlılığı arasında ilişki olmadığı, sosyodemografik verilerden yaş, gelir ve eğitim düzeyi arttıkça benlik saygısının arttığı saptanmıştır. Askerlik döneminde sigara içmenin arttığı ve benlik saygısı puan ortalamalarının azaldığı saptanmıştır. Hemşirelerin; sigaraya başlamanın önlenmesi, içenlerin bırakması ve stresle başetme yöntemleri konularında eğitim vermeleri, askerlerin benlik saygısı düzeylerini artıracak girişimlerde bulunmaları faydalı olacaktır.
