The present thesis was prepared in order to determine the language characteristics of the work entitled Fakirname, which was written by Virani Baba, who was an Alevi dervish belonging to the Hurufi order. The work was written in the Hijri year of 1300, i.e. during the years 1881-1882 A.D. and reproduced by Dervish Mohammed Gulam Shah. The basic starting point of the study is the necessity of knowing the past state of the Turkish Language, which has a long and rich history, and how it has developed during the course of history in order to perform accurate evaluations of its present state. When we examine the investigations and research studies conducted on the topic, it attracts attention that the number of the studies carried out on the Ottoman Turkish period, which started in the 16th century and ended at the beginning of the 20th century with the simple Turkish of the Genç Kalemler (Young Pens) movement, is quite small. With this study, it was aimed to bring a modicum of clearness to the information belonging to the given period. This thesis is a study which comprises the reading and examination of the manuscript work entitled Fakirname, which belongs to the late Ottoman Turkish. The present study, which was carried out in order to present the sound and style characteristics of the period in which the work was written, is composed of parts of introduction, analysis, text, dictionary and facsimile. As the result of this study conducted on Fakirname, the following general conclusions can be drawn:Firstly, the written language of the 19th century is a period when Arabic and Persian words and phrases were commonly being used. However, these words were generally at an understandable level.Secondly, vowel harmony, which is one of the most significant characteristics of the Turkish language stand out in a systematic fashion in the text. Especially palatal harmony is almost precise in the text, labial harmony, however, does not show any irregularities apart from only a few exceptions.Thirdly, utterances relating to both the Old Anatolian Turkish and Turkey Turkish exist together in the work. As it is, we can say that Fakirname is a piece of work belonging to the transitional period.Key Words: Hurufism-Alevism, Virani Baba, 19th Century Turkish Language and sound characteristics.
