Özet

In this study, the factors that determine the crime numbers in Kayseri have been presented by empirically. The aim is to introduce that the crime is effected from the socio-economic factors. Firstly, theoretical and empirical works related with the determinants of crime is examined. Then, the economic models of the crime have been presented. For the period 2002-2008, the change in the city center crime numbers and in the data for socio-economic variables, according to a base year, comparatively analyzed and evaluated. Finally, the relationship between city center crime numbers and socio-economic variables, for the term 2002-2008, has been analyzed through two-way random effect error components regression model. As a result of the analysis, it has determined that unemployment and population effect crime positively. That is, the crime numbers increases as unemployment and population increase, and the crime numbers are negatively related with the income and the police numbers. The results of the analyses related with education and crime indicated that the number of crime increases as the number of high school graduates increases. This result is similar to the previous studies. These results are the first results that contribute to the literature directly. For this aspect, the study is an important support for the next studies.Key words: Crime, Economic models of crime, Determinants of crime.
