Learning is acquiring new knowledge, behaviors, and skills may involve synthesizing different types of information. Memory is an organism's ability to store, retain, and recall information. Without memory, we are capable of only simple reflexes and stereotyped behaviors. Hypoxia is a pathological condition in which the body as a whole (generalized hypoxia) or a region of the body (tissue hypoxia) is deprived of adequate oxygen supply. Generalized hypoxia occurs in healthy people when they ascend to high altitude. High altitude is regions on the Earth's surface high above mean sea level. The pressure and temperature of the atmosphere at high altitude is substantially different than at sea level. These differences can affect living organisms, including humans. In this study we aimed to evaluate the effects of high altitute on learning and memory. Learning and memory performances were evaluated by two way active avoidance task. There were three rat groups, hypoxia (n=10), sham (n=9) and control (n=10). Hypoxia group was kept in a hypobaric hypoxia chamber at hypobaric hypoxia conditions for 14 days/24 hours simulating 6000 m altitute circumstances. and On the 15th day learning experiment was started and finihed on 19th day. Sham group was kept in the chamber under normoxic conditions for 14 days and than they are administered to the learning experiment.. Sham group whom were kept in chamber under normoxic conditions supplied data for the effect of noise and stress factors on learning and memory performance. Hypoxic group and sham group were kept again under same conditions for 10 days and last day were they were evaluated for memory performance (one session). Control group was directly tested for learning performance for 5 days and than 10 days later they were tested for memory performance.Evidences obtained from this thesis study indicate that hipobaric hypoxia mimicking atmospheric conditions at 6000 m, does not effect learning performance while it has deleterious effects to memory performance. Results indicate that ascent to high altitute for investigation and research must be limited in terms of time.Key Words: Hypoxia, high altitute, learning, memory, two way active avoidance.
