In spite of being experienced, death cannot be tasted and identified and it has been a mysterious puzzlement for humans since prehistoric times. The concept of death has also been an indispensable theme for art because the art itself tries to find answers to obscurity and arises from intrinsic drive. By the early years of the 14th century, though the theme of death was handled indirectly as reaching immortality, peace of the life hereafter and sacralization, following the plague epidemic outbreak in the century, the visual projection of death changed and it started to have a genuine identity through direct expression. With the sacred artistic depictions like `Memento Mori` depicting the idea that the life is mortal, `Ars Moriendi` depicting the belief that for a patient, dying on his own bed is the best death and `Danse Macabre` depictions of skeletons that call for death while dancing, a more realistic idea of death with decayed and rotten corpses was shown. In contrast to these frightening expressions, `Vanitas` approach focusing on death with a naive and ethical prospect was used in works of art. Vanitas is a kind of art that depends on `Calvin` culture of Protestantism and is named after ecclesiastes in the Bible and that has some marks and indications showing that everything is worthless. The philosophic approach of Vanitas originated during Renaissance and Vanitas became a more remarkable and a genuine kind of still life in art in Holland during the 17th century. Vanitas depicts the cycle of life and death with daily objects by making allegoric religious definitions. It creates a social ethical metaphor and has been a theme used even in today's works of art thanks to its distinct recreations. In our study, we defined the change and development process of vanitas in artistic hierarchy, we analyzed the creation phase and studied allegoric meanings in detail. Our study looks into vanitas in a wide scale from the first expressions to the post-modernist approaches and we tried to find answers regarding how it affected intellectual aspect in the history of arts. At the end of the study text, the paintings of Fatma SOYDAN PINAR rendered by current concerns of vanitas were analyzed by conceptual and visual sources.

Vanitas; Protestanlığın `Calvin` kültürüne dayanan, adını İncil'in Vaiz Bölümü'nden alan her şeyin boş olduğuna dair bazı belirtke ve nişanelerin hüküm sürdüğü sanat temasıdır.
