This research deals with population development and characteristics (1927-2015) in Viransehir district of Sanliurfa province in the Middle Euphrates section of the Southeastern Anatolia Region. Viransehir district is surrounded by Siverek district of Sanliurfa province and Cinar district of Diyarbakir province in the north, Ceylanpinar district of Sanliurfa province in the south, Derik and Kiziltepe districts of Mardin province and Haliliye central district of Sanliurfa province in the west. Karacadag (1957 m) volcanic cone located in the north is the most important geographical formation of the study area, which is generally a plateau. The definition of the population development and characteristics of Viransehir district based on concrete and scientific data occurred during the Republican period. The formation of the main routes in the district, the development of industrial and commercial activities, the increase of the population and the rapid developments in the spatial area have started to become observable during the Republican period. Economic development initiatives launched in the country after the proclamation of the Republic influenced Viransehir district in a positive way. However, the development of the district population in this process has been faster than the development of the population of Turkey and Sanliurfa province. So much so that the population of Turkey increased about 6 times in between 1927-2015 and the population of Sanliurfa province increased 9 times. The population of Viransehir district, which was determined as 12.321 in the first census in 1927, rose to 184.604 in 2015. This shows that the population in the research area grew about 15 times from 1927 to 2015. The maximum value observed in the annual growth rate of the survey population was 80.83‰ in between 1950-1955, while the minimum value was -38.91‰ in between 1980-1985.The social and economic characteristics of Viransehir district population are unique. Migrated population structure comes to the forefront in the research. On the other hand, it attracts attention with its educational status and young population, which are below the average of Turkey and Sanliurfa province. It is also seen that a significant part of the active population in economic activities still works in the agricultural sector.
