Özet

The island of Kos is geographically the first among the nearest islands to the shores of Anatolia. It was conquered by Chaka (Tzachas in Greek) Beg for the first time in Turkish history. Ottoman takeover of the island dates back to 1522, during the reign of Süleyman the Magnificent. It was initially organised into the status of a separate county and, later incorporated to the Aegean Islands Province or Eyalet-i Cezair-i Bahr-i Sefid in Turkish which was established in 1534.Ottoman State applied to some new administrative arrangements in Kos same as in the other islands for the implementation of Tanzimat system just after the promulgation of Tanzimat Edict in 1839. As a first step institution of Muhassıllıks were founded. However, kaymakams were instead assigned to the districts culminating from the failure and dissatisfaction of previous system, in 1842.Soon after the Turkish conquest, there was witnessed voluntary migration to the island. Thus, facilitating the ?Turkisation? of the Island of Kos, and the process of pious endowments was initiated. The thesis titled ?The Island of Kos in Our Recent History? therefore emphasised on this two issues, so that the administrative structure of the island under the Ottoman Turkish rule, and living conditions of the Turkish inhabitants of the island, their style of life well as the works of the charitable endowments were taken into inspection.
