This study aims to evaluate the novels, Shirley (1849), Villette (1853) and TheProfessor (1857) by Charlotte Brontë (1816-1855) who is a successful Britishrepresentative of the maturation novels that are called Bildungsroman in Europeanliterature in the light of feminist theory and theories of gender. In these novels byBrontë, the characters live in a society that appreciates the success based on diligence, perseverance and discipline. Therefore, main characters feel the conflict between theirinner needs or desires and society's expectation from them to mature in accordance withthese notions. Moreover, another element which differentiates these novels from manyother Victorian novels is the presence of patriarchal ideology and social institutionswhich play an influential role in the characters' evolvement. That is why this studyinvestigates if the protagonists in mentioned novels can evolve as individuals who arefree from patriarchy within a society in which the intertwined ideologies prevail. Withinthis context, both theories of gender and notions such as socialization and individuationare mentioned in this study. In the first chapter of this thesis, the nineteenth century British society that formsthe historical background of the novels is introduced alongside its social and ideologicalcharacteristics. Also, feminist theory and theories of gender are mentioned and theconcepts such as `sex`, `gender`, `patriarchal` or `matriarchal` are defined in thischapter. The last section of the first part focuses on various theoreticians' examinationsof the concepts such as `individual`, `socialization` and `individuation`. The secondchapter shows the separation of public and private spheres and the patriarchalinstitutions like family or education in Shirley (1849) and it examines the maturationprocess of the protagonists within these institutions. The third chapter investigates theeffect of these institutions and matriarchal ideology on the maturation process of theprotagonists in Villette (1853). Finally, the last chapter discusses the effect of the sameelements on the individuation process of the protagonists in The Professor (1857).

Son bölümde iseaynı ataerkil kurumlar ve anaerkil ideolojinin The Professor (1857) romanındaki anakarakterlerin bireyleşme sürecine etkisini tartışılmaktadır.
