The purpose of this study is to determine the perception levels of teachers working in primary and secondary schools about the competency of their mentors, to describe the effect of various variables on the perceptions of teachers about the competency of their mentors, and to create a different perspective on the use of coaching system in supporting mentoring in reference to the perceptions that are determined in the study. This study has utilized a single screening method, which is one of the general screening models. The population of the study consists of the teachers working in primary and secondary schools in the city of Gaziantep in the academic year of 2014-2015. The sample of the study is composed of the teachers working in a total of three districts, two of which are central districts. As the data collection tool, `Mentoring Scale` developed by Bakay (2006) and a form of 10 questions that evaluates demographic information prepared by the same researcher have been used in the study. Among 72 schools included to the sample, 32 of them were visited, and 371 teachers were involved in the questionnaire and 316 of them were evaluated. The study, in the analysis of the data obtained, appplied standard deviation, mean, which are descriptive statistical methods, frequency and percentage techniques. In order to determine whether there is a significant difference in the perceptions of the teachers in regard to their mentors, t-test and one-way variance analysis have been conducted whereas LSD test has been carried out to find the source of the difference among the groups. The results of the analyses have indicated that the perceptions of the teachers on the competency of their mentors are in the `middle` level in all of the sub-dimensions. There has been a significant difference in the perceptions of the teachers working in primary and secondary schools on the competency of their mentors in terms of age, candidacy status, seniority, educational status, being in the same/different branch with their mentors, and frequency of contact with their mentors. On the other hand, the study has not determined a significant difference in the perceptions of teachers on the competency of their mentors in terms of other variables in the study. Key words: Mentoring, Coaching, Teacher Coaching.
