In this study, the male and female androgynous perspectives in some English poems of the 17th and 19th century will be analysed comparatively by considering the features of the periods. Within the frame of contemporary theories, it aims to engage with androgyny in these poems, which provides an alternative critical view to the normative regulations of gender separating women and men with sharp lines. Regarding this context, the first chapter presents the historical development of androgyny which emerged in the dialogues in Symposium in which Plato questions the source of love. In the second chapter, androgyny that the 17th century poets John Donne and Aphra Behn employ in their poems in which they criticize gender stereotypes and emphasize the flexibility of gender roles will be examined in the context of `love`. Through the poems of the 19th century poets Alfred Lord Tennyson and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, the third chapter will focus on the strong possibility that an `androgynous` mind allows individuals to free themselves from stereotypes including about those of love and gender. This study concludes that androgyny which is disputed in relation to love from both male and female perspectives in the poems of both centuries is utilized not only to question the long-standing gender discrimination in the society but to synthesize the roles attributed to both sexes and enhance the creativity of individuals from various aspects.Key words: androgyny, androgyne, love, gender roles.
