The aim of this study was to determine the quality of compost produced from the organic part of the municipal solid waste and wastewater treatment plant sludge mixtures. 6 column reactors with a height of 100 cm and diameter of 40 cm were used for aerobic composting of solid waste and sludge mixtures. Wastewater sludges and municipal solid wastes were provided from İSKİ Paşaköy Advanced Biological Treatment Plant and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Composting and Recycling Plant, respectively. During the study compost process was followed by the analyses of pH, water content, volatile suspended solid content(VSS), total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and total organic carbon (TOC) parameters of the samples collected from reactors. After the end of the compost process, produced compost quality was determined by Rottegrad, phytotoxicity, Salmonella (hygiene) and heavy metal (copper, lead, ferrous, nickel, zinc and chromium) analysis. Further, the changes of the temperatures in compost reactors were followed with digital thermometer which was put in center of the compost reactors.According to Dewar test results, product compost which obtained from the reactor R1 is classified into just finished compost and product compost which obtained from the reactor R2 and reactor R3 are included in 4th. class compost group. According to Plant Growth Performance Standards, produced compost samples which obtained from the reactors R1, R2 and R3 are classified very mature compost, produced compost samples which obtained from the reactors R4, R5 and R6 are classified as immature compost. Salmonella sp. bacteria are not determined in all end products of all produced samples from reactors, indicating the hygienic quality of the compost product. The higher sludge content results with the higher heavy metal content in the final product.
