Özet

ABSTRACT This study includes the terracotta antefixes and acroteria found in Anatolia. The cities of Anatolia and the Aegean islands produced terracotta antefixes and acroteria to decorate their buildings. Anatolian types have influenced the islands close to the west coast of Anatolia. Therefore, the antefixes and the acroteria of the islands are similar by their form and decoration to Anatolia. The roof system which uses the antefixes and eaves tiles at the bottom of the slope instead of a lateral sima is documented in Anatolia in Archaic and Classical periods. Both the pentagonal form of Corinthian system antefixes and the semicircular form of Laconian system antefixes appear in Anatolia around 575 - 550 BC. Besides these types palmette antefixes were also popular. Terracotta acroteria were used in Anatolia. Fragments belong to volute acroteria, disc acroteria, sphinx and griffin acroteria have been found in Anatolia. The volute acroteria and the disc acroteria are the most popular types. There is a tradition for the use of the volute acroteria in Anatolia. To conclude, the cities of Anatolia produced varied types of the antefixes and the acroteria during the Archaic period. However, there is very little material dated to after the Arhaic period, probably due to the events such as Ionian revolt, assaults by the Persians, destruction of Miletus in 494 BC. IX.
