ABSTRACT This study aims to investigate and explore the use of outsourcing firms for laundry services in hotel organizations in Mugla Region. Outsourcing is defined as that rather than producing all services and goods within them, organizations buy some of the services or soods from external firms aiming hoping that this will be beneficial for them. Outsourcing can be used in a number of areas including hiring temporary employees, training employees and agreeing on a partnership with external companies to produce some goods and services together. This study consists of five chapters. The first chapter provides an explanation about the rationale, objectives, method, limitations, and the structure of the study. In the second chapter, the existing literature on outsourcing is reviewed and discussed. This chapter defines outsourcing, provides explanations about financial principles of outsourcing, discusses the advantages and disadvantages of outsourcing and explains some possible steps when going through the outsourcing process in an organization. In the third chapter, the literature review findings about the housekeeping department and the laundry section in hotels are given. This chapter first provides a brief explanation about the organizational structure of hotel organizations and then explains sub-sections of the housekeeping department. It finally discusses the role and the importance of the laundary section in hotels. Chapter 4 describes and justifies about the research methodology chosen for this research project. It provides an explanation about how data from hotel organizations were collected via questionnaires and interviews. For this study on the use of outsourcing firms for laundry services in hotel organizations data was collected via questionnaire and interviews from hotels in Marmaris, Bodrum and Fethiye in Mugla region. The designed questionnaire was completed by 62 houskeepers in addition 42 houskeepers were interviewed. Chapter 4 also presents the empirical findings of this study. Chapter 5 discusses the research findings and gives a number of conclusions of this research. This chapter further provides several recommendations for practice and future research. This research study found that smaller and budget hotels tend to work with external laundry firms whereas luxury and big hotels appear to keep and use their own laundary sections. It was found that managers in hotels have lack of knowledge about working with external laundry firms and which stages/steps to follow after deciding to use an outsourcing firm. It emerged from the findings that laundry firms in Mugla region do not have sufficient knowledge and experience to meet hotels expectations. It seems that using outsourcing firms can be beneficial for smaller and budget hotels. On the other hand using an outsourcing firm for laundry services can be a disadvantage for large and luxury hotels. This means that outsourcing does not always reduce cost and improve profitability and quality. Hotels should therefore need to act and decide on their size and financial capability when making outsourcing decisions.
