The states do not want to leave the issue of establishing generations that will entrust its future to a chance. Therefore, a state takes all the measures to raise good/ideal citizens that would help and contribute to the society controlled by its own. When given to individuals' preferences, education being one of the fundamental rights and liberties throughout the world, cannot be sufficiently fulfilled or even it may fall into different fields. For this reason, education passing through various phases has become compulsory as of the Ottoman age to the present in our country as well. The Turks, known for being devotee of their customs and traditions, rearranged their societal rules by combining previous customs and traditions with religion after acceptance of Islam because teaching and handing down these traditions to future generations was accepted as the essential condition for building the societal structure controlling the state based upon its solid history, culture and etc. Therefore, courses such as History of Philosophy (Tarih-i Felsefe), Ottoman/World History (Tarih-i Osmani/Düvel), and Scientific/General Geography (Coğrafya-yı Umumi) were included in curriculum following the Tanzimat reform era. Moreover, considerable improvements were made the process of establishing the basis for teaching of Social Sciences Course by making regulations in the scope of these courses and their contents. After the proclamation of the Republic, the Law of Unification of Education (Tevhid-i Tedrisat Kanunu) was introduced and John Dewey, invited to Turkey, was assigned to prepare a report regarding education system. After these attempts, notions such as `Social Studies, Collective Education, and Vocational School` were introduced into 1926 program. Moreover, a course covering the subjects of Social Sciences Course, History, Geography, and Civics entered into curriculum in 1968. In 2005, within the framework of the regulation towards a constructivist approach on education, constructivist, student-centered education based on learning came to the forefront in the field of Social Sciences. With the introduction of 12-year education system in 2012, it was decided that 5th grade Social Sciences course would be taught by branch teachers instead of class teachers. Therefore, the aim of the study is to examine the development of teaching of Social Sciences in Turkey in the historical process as well as changes made to this course. Keywords: Education, Training, Teaching of Social Sciences, Historical Development.

O yüzden Tanzimat dönemi ve sonrasında eğitim öğretim programlarında Tarih-i Felsefe, Tarih-i Osmani/Düvel, Coğrafya-yı İlmi/Umumî gibi derslere yer verilmiştir. Tabiatıyla bu derslerin ve içeriklerinin kapsamında zaman içerisinde bir dizi düzenlemeye gidilerek sosyal bilgiler dersi öğretiminin zeminini oluşturan tarihi süreçte önemli yol kat edilmiştir. Cumhuriyet'in ilanından sonra Tevhid-i Tedrisat Kanunu çıkarılmış; eğitim sistemiyle ilgili Türkiye'ye davet edilen John Dewey'e bir rapor hazırlatılmıştır.
