ABSTRACTThe determination of the problems of our public structure and creating solutionsis only possible by doing extensive research on the changes in the society in Turkey.More emphasis has been put on research involving the structure of rural areas inour country in recent years. It is possible to acquire detailed information about thechanges and to provide solutions according to the information obtained from suchresearch revealing the public structure from various aspects. It is likely that morerealistic and effective policy can be formed in parallel to increasing numbers of suchresearch about rural areas. The aim of this study is to investigate the social and economical aspects of theafter-migration changes in the public structure in Harmancık town of Bursa, to evalutethe structure of migration and to investigate the effect of status quo on the tendency ofpublic to migrate. Surveys were applied to local people determined by samplingmethods to investigate the social and economical structure of the families and theirtendency to migrate.According to the results of the study, the size of the families was narrowed to 4or 5 people.after migration. Most of the familes are from low income group. Thissituation restricts the families from having households that can be classified asluxurious and forces them to spare money. The families have very limited contact withcultural activities. Family members spend their free time by watching TV or going tocoffee shops, and the custom of reading books or daily newspapers is very low. Thefamily members are pessimistic about the future and their main goal is to have a goodjob and to provide their children with better living standards. The main reason underlying migration is the repelling characteristics of living ina rural area. These include unemployment, constricted social contacts, insufficiency ofsocial and cultural services, and insufficiency of favorable education facilities. Thetendency of migration is higher among the younger generation. The reason of thistendency is the lack of suitable vacancies in town and the insufficiency of agriculturalfields belonging to the family.Key words: Harmancık, Social and Economical Structure, Demography, CulturalStructure.
