Özet

The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the applicability of Metrobus systems inour country. The facts that the bus system is not able to secure the required comfort and levelof service, that it remains inadequate in the present operating conditions and that it isnot able to meet increasing transportation demands, shepherd the city governors to railsystems in public transportation projects in cities. However, rail systems have highinvesting costs, long construction processes, and limited access. Because of thesematters, rail systems cannot resolve problems in the short-run and in the medium term.At that point, Metrobus systems emerges as an alternative formula to rail systems indeveloping countries especially in those having inadequate resources, since thesesystems seize positive sides of bus and rail systems while countering the negative sides.Prior in this study, information concerning the types currently used in in-citypublic transportation is given. After that, the characteristics of the Metrobus systemsare illustrated, comparisons with other systems are made, and its applications in theworld are mentioned. Finally, the ?Antalya Rail System Project?, which is decided tobe constructed in our country after feasibility studies are completed, is selected as asample. According to that exemplary project the possibility of Metrobus systems as analternative to rail systems in our country is explored. Keywords: Public Transportation, Metrobus, Tire Wheel Subway, Bus RapidTransit (BRT), Antalya Rail System Project.
